This is an international association football competition contested by the senior men's national teams of the members of FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association).
FIFA is the sport's global governing body.
The championship has been awarded every four years since the inaugural tournament in 1930 except in 1942 and 1946 due to the second world war.
The current champion is Germany who won its fourth title at the 2014 tournament in Brazil. Other winners in the World Cup have been Brazil (who have never missed a tournament), Italy, Argentina, Uruguay, England, France and Spain.
The three years in between is a qualification phase to determine which teams qualify for the World Cup finals.
There have been 20 World Cup tournaments which have been won by eight different national teams.
In order for a country to host the World Cup stadium works and infrastructure projects have to be done in preparation for the event.
Numerous construction projects are also added to facilitate hosting.
The security has to be intensified to ensure safety of everyone during the games, the world cup has been regarded as the most protected sports event in history.
The next World Cup 2018 will be held in Russia.
